Advent Devotional Reading from Matthew & Luke
A Review of Two Books - The Hardest Peace & Just Show Up

Most Days I'm Just Thankful

On the mornings my daughter has school, we go to the end of our driveway and meet the school bus. I know she climbs up those steps, sits near the front because although she’s certainly not a baby, the bus driver puts the younger elementary kids up by her. My Allie gives Ms. Vicki all kinds of updates and they are friends.

I don’t live in the community of my childhood. Yet, in just a few years time, this place has become home. Any given week, I’ve scheduled a coffee date, lunch, book club or Bible study with the women in my tribe.

Today, I went to my closet full of clothes. I decided to put on my very favorite shirt (the blue striped one) and jeans (faded with bright white stitching). All day long, I’ll feel comfortable and cozy.

While it doesn’t pay necessarily, I write like it’s my job. Hopefully, I’m writing my way into more opportunities. Either way, I’ve learned that God made me a writer. It helps me process my thoughts and there are few things I love more than seeing an excellent sentence on a page.

Whenever my husband and I discuss a new project or idea, he must immediately start researching. He’s a walking catalog of information about most things. We’ll be talking and he just can’t get to the computer fast enough to start learning more. His curiosity is insatiable and contagious.

God has taught me much about prayer lately. I’m learning about the word, “sit.” Sit (in it) when I feel disappointment or hurt. Sit (beside them) when a loved one suffers from illness or loss. I’m realizing prayer and presence help more than we can possibly know.

My cousin shared a picture of Grandma’s old farm place on Facebook yesterday. A whole flood of memories and emotions washed over me. I’m older now, and with each passing year, I have a greater appreciation for my childhood. I wish every child could experience the love and adventure I did. I find it amazing when folks are called to offer this up to little ones through fostering or adoption.

Stepping Back To Consider The Blessings

The sun shines just so through the windows at the back of my house. Wherever it hits during the day, I’m sure to look down and see a cat or dog sunning in that exact spot. We’re all warm and fed and lack for nothing.

Most days I’m just thankful.
